History
Swanwick Colliery was established by the Palmer-Morewood family in 1866. The Deep Hard , Deep Soft, Low Main, Silkstone, Top Hard and Cannel seams were being worked in 1939, by the New Pit, the Old PiIt and Lily Street Pit (Cannel). It remained in the control of the Palmer-Morewood family until 1947, when it passed to the National Coal Board following the nationalisation of the coal industry. It was put into the East Midland Division Area No. 4. The colliery was closed in 1968.
