History | In the 18th century special Acts of Parliament were passed in many areas of the country establishing turnpike trusts which had powers to collect tolls in exchange for providing and maintaining a road. A General Turnpike Act was passed in 1773 to speed up the Parliamentary process. In 1888 the responsibility for main roads was transferred to County Councils (non-main roads followed in 1894). The Chesterfield-Worksop Trust had been wound up by 1884. |
