She married diplomat and orientalist Percy Smythe, 8th Viscount Strangford on 6 August 1862; he had reviewed her book on Egyptian sepulchres and Syrian shrine, which she had written following her travels in Asia Minor in 1858; after his death in 1869 she devoted herself to nursing, particularly with regard to training.
