He was one of the foremost oculists of his day; he was assistant surgeon at St Thomas's Hospital before becomg Consulting Surgeon at the Royal London Opthalmic Hospital in London for many years. He wrote " A Guide to the Practical Study of the Disease of the Eye", 3rd edition published 1866. He married Mary Louisa Simpkinson on 2 Oct 1851. Following the death of his wife in 1870, he left London and retired professionally to live in Dorking, Surrey
