He entered the East India Company as a cadet in 1805; he served with credit in the Pindari War (1817-1818) and reached the rank of Major in the First Regiment of the Bengal Light Cavalry; he also singled himself out as an officer of considerable scientific attainments, being employed on important Indian surveys; he was an authority on geology and collected birds for the Asiatic Society; he was elected a member of the Royal Society. He married Margaret Maria Clements (he would seem to have married before); he had two daughters, Mary (c1814-1894), who married John Price, and Emma Maria (born 1832), who married Henry Charles Mitchinson.

Third son of Willingham Franklin and his wife Hannah (nee Weekes) and brother of Sir John Franklin.
