| History | A Copper Indian encountered by John Franklin, described in Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, 1823; she was among a party of Copper Indians with whom he and his expedition wintered at Fort Enterprise in Northern Canada in 1820-1821; she was then aged 15 or 16 and already had children by two husbands; she became the object of attraction for two of Franklin's crew, Robert Hood and George Back, who were said to have been on the verge of fighting a duel over her; when Back voulnteered to go on a trip to look for food and supplies, she ended up in Hood's bed, and went on to deliver his child (Hood was murdered before he had the chance to know he was a father); the last we know of her is that in July 1834 she was encountered with her family among a group of Cooper Indians by George Back during his own Arctic land expedition. |
