He joined the Royal Navy on 6 Feb 1809; he was appointed as a midshipman on Franklin's first overland expedition as a primary surveyor and artist, mapping the routes taken; he was shot in the head by an Iroquois voyageur, Michel Teroahaute, on 20 Oct 1821.
