A pupil of Linnaeus at Uppsala University; he sailed to the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take post as a tutor; he sailed with James Cook on his 2nd voyage, 1772-1775; after his return to Cape Town in July 1775, he journeyed into the African interior, reaching the Great Fish River, returning to the Cape in April 1786.
