He joined the navy in 1827; he sailed as a lieutenant on H.M.S. Terror with Commander Crozier on the Antarctic expedition in 1839, but only got as far as Tasmania, where he was selected in 1840 to stay on to found and look after the Magnetic Observatory in Hobart. He styaed at the Observatory until 1853 (when Admiralty funding was withdrawn), after which he went to Victoria and held various Victorian public service posts.
