He was ordained as a deacon in 1843 and become a fellow of Christ Church, Cambridge, where was later a lecturer, dean and assistant tutor, 1849-1861. He served as a chaplain to the Bishop of London, 1859-1861. He was appointed Bishop of Madras in 1861 and remained in that post until his retirement in 1898.
