History | He went on several expeditions to the Arctic from 1848 to 1854. In 1857 he was given command of The Fox by Lady Franklin in a privately funded expedition to look for evidence confriming the fate of Sir John Franklin's expedition. In 1859 he returned with the written memorandum confirming Franklin's death and the abandonment of the ships. He published his account of the expedition in the same year. He was knighted in 1860. |
