He surveyed Australia between 1795 and 1803. On his return to England his ship needed to call in at Mauritius for repairs, but, as France was again at war with Britain, he was held prisoner by the French for over 6 years before being allowed to complete his return home, having given his word that he would not fight against the French on his release. On his return home he wrote and had published his account of his last expedition in A Voyage to Terra Australis.
