History
He developed a strong interest in exploration, particularly of the poles, and became the centre of a scientific circle of polar explorers and their supporters; he wa elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1837; he was an energetic advocate of expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin; based on the assumption that Franklin followed the orders given to him and his own knowledge of prevailing sea currents, he defined the area which the expedition was ulitmately found to have reached, but his advice was ignored.
