He became a lawyer after studying at Oriel College, Oxford, and pursued a legal career in India, rising to become the Puisne Judge of Supreme Court in Madras. He married Catherine Elizabeth Burnside (1793-1824) on 19 Feb 1818; had 3 children, Catherine Ann (1818-1892, who married Robert Drummond Burrell Rawnsley), Willingham (born 1823) and Elizabeth (born 15 Sep 1824, died 17 Nov 1824).
