Title
East Midlands Regional Reading Group project
Date
2005-2008
Description
The East Midlands Regional Reading Group Project was created through a regional co-ordination body, the East Midlands Museums Libraries and Archives Council (EMMLAC). EMMLAC later became part of the Museum and Library Association as MLA East Midlands. The original grant application to the Arts Council England promised a pilot project to develop a programme of reading group activity “linking readers to readers, writers and to other art forms in order to enhance the creative reading experience and provide new opportunities for writers and artists to develop their work through an interactive relationship with readers”. The original draft creative programme suggested a “pick and mix” approach, enabling local authorities to prioritise local events, which were to include a reader/writer mentoring scheme, storytelling project, regional author tour, regional Read Around. One of the most important strands of the projects was called Writers2Readers. This was a library promotion in the East Midlands featuring nine published writers making visits to reading groups to discuss their books and share reading experiences.
