Administrative History | This was a statutory committee set up under the 1948 Children's Act. It inherited the child welfare functions of the Maternity and Child Welfare committee (see 1/30/1-2), and the responsibility for provision of children's homes and residential accommodation from the Public Assistance committee, also the power to provide approved school and remand home accommodation from the Education committee (see 1/17/1-48). County and county borough councils were to appoint a Children's Officer and to supervise child care in institutions and foster homes. Under the 1970 Social Services Act these functions passed to the new Social Services committee (see 1/71/1). |
