Administrative History
Counties were given permissive powers to build asylums for pauper lunatics in 1808 and this was made compulsory in 1853. The visiting committee reported to quarter sessions until 1888 and subsequently to the county council, until the asylum (known as the mental hospital after 1929) was transferred to the regional hospital board under the 1947 National Health Service Act. These minutes are all unsigned. Agenda papers are often included.
