Description | Along the bottom are pasted autographs cut from letters of George Back, William Parry, Edward Bird, James Clark Ross, Francis Beaufort, Edward Sabine, Baillie Hamilton, John Richardson and Frederick Beechey, with those of John Franklin, James Fitzjames and John Barrow (x2), whose portraits are hanging on the wall above the Council. The painting depicted an imaginary scene involving the main protagonists in the search for Franklin meeting in 1847 (no such council ever existed and no such meeting ever took place) and was painted by Pearce in 1851; it was engraved by J. Scott and published by Graves in 1853. Size 81 x 61 cm. |
