Administrative History | James Franklin (1783-1834) was the 3rd son and 7th child of Willingham and Hannah Franklin, and an older brother of Sir John Franklin. He entered the East India Company as a cadet in 1805; he served with credit in the Pindari War (1817-1818) and reached the rank of Major in the First Regiment of the Bengal Light Cavalry; he also singled himself out as an officer of considerable scientific attainments, being employed on important Indian surveys; he was an authority on geology and collected birds for the Asiatic Society; he was elected a member of the Royal Society. He married Margaret Maria Clements (he would seem to have married before); he had two daughters, Mary (c1814-1894), who married John Price, and Emma Maria (born 1832), who married Henry Charles Mitchinson. Franklin died at Greenwich on 31 August 1834. |
