| Administrative History | The Guillemard family was the maternal side of the family of Lady Franklin, whose father John Griffin had married Jane Guillemard in 1786. The Guillemards traced their roots back to Normandy and had originally come to England as Huguenot refugees. The family prospered as silk weavers and enjoyed social standing by the end of the 18th century. Lady Franklin was particularly helped in her education by her uncle John Guillemard, who taught her several subjects herself and encourged her to analayse things and think for herself. Several members of the family became Anglican clergymen, including two, James and William Henry who sent letters to their relative Eleanor Isabella Franklin later Gell. |
