Administrative History
James Dixon (1814-1896) was one of the foremost oculists of his day; he was assistant surgeon at St Thomas's Hopsital before becomg Consulting Surgeon at the Royal London Opthalmic Hospital in London for many years. He wrote " A Guide to the Practical Study of the Disease of the Eye" (3rd edition published in 1866). He married Mary Louisa Simpkinson on 2 Oct 1851. Following the death of his wife in 1870, he retired professionally and left London to live in Dorking, Surrey.
