TitleLetter from Isabella Cracroft to her niece Eleanor Isabella Franklin, on Eleanor's prospect of a happy home and on the dispute between Lady Franklin and Eleanor, trying to excuse her daughter Sophy's support for Lady Franklin
Date[26 Aug 1849]
DescriptionShe rejoices in the prospect of Eleanor having a comfortable happy home. What joy to be at peace with the "beloved Object" and removed from the painful issues of the past. She grieves at Eleanor's position as to her poor Mama, but feels kindly towards for her for Eleanor's father's sake, since she has worked herself up into such a state of excitement and does not have the consolation of God. Isabella excuses her Sophy for her part in the painful affair, proceeding solely from the hoping to comfort and assist Eleanor's Mama and out of the deep affection for her uncle. She assures Sophy has not urged Eleanor's Mama's "wild scheme", only followed her wishes with the hope of soothing her "excited feelings". She is surprised she had not had the truth spoken to her in reference to the private expedition by Sir E. Parry, who must have seen it from the beginning in the light of every other sober person, but did not convey that impression in a letter of his she read. She is sending a pair of slippers to Eleanor. She will be be glad to help Eleanor in any way and gives her kindest love to her "beloved One".
Only dated Tuesday; 26 Aug 1848(?) has been added in pencil but 1849 seems a more likely date due to the references to Eleanor's "beloved one", John Philip Gell, who had not returned to England in 1848, and the dispute between Lady Franklin and Eleanor about money in the prolonged absence of Sir John Franklin
