Title
Letter from Isabella Cracroft to her niece Eleanor Isabella Gell, following the visit by Eleanor's daughter to the Cracrofts, with reference to Sir John Franklin's promotion to Rear Admiral
Date
4 Nov [1852]
Description
She writes a few lines while the visit of Eleanor's daughter is still fresh in her memory; the child was too excited and pleased with everything to sleep, continually wanting to play with her cousins; she hopes she is the not the worse from the long journey in unfavourable weather, but her servants would have taken good care of her while waiting for the train, which was not for long. Sorry not to be able to send her chickens and eggs, but there was not enough notice to the farm. Thanks for her useful present. The promotion of Eleanor's father has increased her hopes of his being restored to them after hearing him say that, if he lived, in 6 years he would be an admiral, if the the old fellow die off, which has indeed what has happened in the last two years in the higher ranks of the naval profession. She hopes the little boys will like the toys she sent; she thought Franklin would prefer the dog and the baby the kitten. She thought Mr Gell looked quite well, and she saw many clergy making their way to Southampton for the same reason as Eleanor's husband.
Dated only 4 Nov, but 1852 added in pencil, which tallies with the date of Franklin's promotion, which took place in October 1852.
