Description
Melbourne: News Cuttings Book, 1874-1900 [modern pagination]
These cuttings were accumulated by William Garratt, at one time agent to the Melbourne estate. The volume contains his bookplate. The cuttings are of particular interest for the evidence they provide of the activities in the later 19th century of local bodies such as the Parish Council and the Parochial Church Council, as well as larger district councils. Comments on Earl Cowper as an absentee landlord also reflect local opinion. The cultural Life of Melbourne at this period is demonstrated by the cuttings relating to concerts and other musical and dramatic performances.
