TitleResearch file: Moorwood Sough
Date1968-1969
DescriptionFile of papers re a project to explore and renovate Moorwood Sough, 1968 to 1969. The contents of the file are very varied, but largely consist of correspondence between Doug Nash and Nellie Kirkham, as well as Laporte Industries (General Chemicals Division) of Eyam, the client. An idea of the scope of the Moorwood Sough project may be gained by a quotation from a list of ten work priorities dated 29 Jun 1968, found within this file:
1. Bye-passing the "drain" of the sough by laying a 36 inch pipe direct from the Inspection Shaft to the village brook.
2. The re-excavation and renovation of Castle Rock Shaft.
3. The withdrawal and removal of rocks washed into the low, narrow, section of sough immediately prior to Castle Rock Shaft.
4. The withdrawal and removal, via Castle Rock Shaft, of the insecure wall pack in the 20 foot wide section forty feet downstream of the shaft.
5. The removal of the fallen rock, damming the passage at approximately 2,800 feet from the Inspection Shaft.
6. To survey to, and ascertain the position and nature of the "raise" (Shaft?) at approximately 2,500 feet upstream of the Inspection Shaft.
7. To clear and dispose of rock half filling the 15/20 feet low, narrow, section of passage immediately prior to the raise.
8. To push on the investigation to Cliffstile Mine, and to advise on any problems encountered.
9. To clear the fall in Cliffstile Mine.
10. To continue the investigation from Cliffstile Mine to Glebe Mine, and beyond if desired.
The internal reference used within Operation Mole for this project was 74/66/67/1968.
