Administrative HistoryEstablished in 1981, the University of the Third Age (U3A) is a UK-wide movement (loosely based on a model established in France) which brings together people in their ‘third age’ (the first age being childhood and the second age being in work or raising a family) to develop their interests and continue their learning in a friendly and informal environment.

The Buxton branch was established in 1996. The Oral History Group was established in 2015 by Anne Rogerson, a History graduate who taught the subject for over 30 years, and has led several Oral History projects. Members of the group include those born in Buxton and nearby, as well as others to who moved to the area for work or in retirement. An average of twelve participants attend each meeting, held twice a month between September and July and usually involve hosting a speaker or facilitating a group discussion with members sharing their memories of a particular topic, which are then recorded.
