Description
This series comprises educational and reference materials relating mainly to Roman history, archaeology and ancient sites, produced during the mid-20th century. The contents include guidebooks, translated texts, academic reports and publications describing Roman forts, villas and cities such as Housesteads, Portchester and Wroxeter, as well as studies on megalithic monuments and classical antiquities.
Contributors include archaeologists and scholars such as Eric Birley, Kathleen M. Kenyon and R. S. Newall, whose works provide information on material culture, military history and architecture of the Roman Empire. The series also contains translations of classical texts, including Tacitus’s 'Life of Cnaus Julius Agricola', and practical guides for students and visitors to ancient sites.
It is possible that this material was gathered together as part of Lawrence du Garde Peach's research for articles and plays.
It is also contains collections of plays by other writers, some of which would be later performed by the Great Hucklow Players.
