Archive CreatorBagshawe family of Foolow, antiquarians, collectors and solicitors
Administrative HistoryThese are the papers of Benjamin Bagshawe senior (d. 1879), Benjamin Bagshawe junior (1845-1907) and E. G. Bagshawe (1875-1956). The Bagshawes were farmers and lead merchants at Foolow. Benjamin Bagshawe junior was a solicitor with offices in Norfolk Street, Sheffield and he was also active in politics on behalf of the Liberal Unionists. Both he and his son, E. G. Bagshawe, were keen antiquarians and acquired an extensive collection of documents, notably in connection with the compilation of a Bagshawe pedigree, never completed. Their connections with Foolow remained close, and it was their Derbyshire background and interests which produced this collection. See 'Arrangement' below for further details.
Custodial HistoryThis collection was transferred to Derbyshire Record Office by Sheffield Archives in July 2013. Sheffield City Libraries obtained the collection from two sources: (1) donation in Autumn 1956 from the executors of Mr EG Bagshawe, who died in August 1956 (2) a bookseller. The records were collected by Mr EG Bagshawe, and his father Benjamin.

This catalogue was created by Sheffield Archives, when the collection was in its custody. The original note on the subject of Custodial History reads:
"In the autumn of 1956 the executors of Mr. E. G. Bagshawe (who died in August of that year), gave to the Sheffield City Libraries a large collection of documents and papers which had been accumulated by him and his father, Benjamin Bagshawe (d.1907). The Library also acquired another large consignment of these papers which had passed into the hands of a bookseller. When they were all assembled they comprised a number of sacks containing deeds, a number of metal deed boxes and wooden chests containing books and papers, and numerous cartons of more recent correspondence. The whole collection was in very bad condition, particularly the contents of the metal boxes and wooden chests which were mildewed and very dirty; the bundles of papers in many of them had broken and become hopelessly confused, as well as having been a prey to mice and spiders. Several interesting maps were picked up as they lay torn on a garage floor. The work of cleaning, sorting and repairing therefore took a good deal of time. Eventually, the component parts of a very heterogeneous collection came into view."
Arrangement1. ANTIQUARIAN COLLECTION
Documents acquired by Benjamin and EG Bagshawe for their antiquarian interest. Benjamin Bagshawe, particularly in his early life in the 1870s was planning a history of the High Peak; his son was concerned mainly with a pedigree of the family of Bagshawe, widespread in the Peak District. In pursuit of these hobbies, they collected deeds and other documents, the most important being items acquired from the Bateman sale and the muniments of the Eyres of Hassop Hall. It has not been possible to discover the origins of all the other documents.

2. ANTIQUARIAN NOTES AND RELATED PAPERS
Notes of Benjamin and EG Bagshawe from documents in the British Museum, Public Record Office and other in private hands, which were relevant to their Derbyshire studies. Also contain antiquarian correspondence.

3. WYATT'S LEAD MINING RECORDS
William Wyatt of Foolow (d. 1857), mineral agent, solicitor, and owner of lead mining interests. Papers include lead mining account books, maps and other, 18th-early 19th century. Benjamin Bagshawe's father was the cousin and executor of William Wyatt.
For the records of Wyatt's Lead Mining records (formerly BagC Part III), see D7676/BagC/174-178, 181-211, 213-221, 350B-660, 710, 3510-3512, 3356, 3517, 3522 and 3538

4. WYATT, BAGSHAWE AND OTHER FAMILIES
Solicitor's and other business papers of Wyatt, Bagshawe, et. al. Clients include the Derbyshire families of Barker, Carleill and Middleton. Wyatt and Bagshawe were both active in Liberal and later Unionist politics. Bagshawe acted as Libreral-Unionist agent for the Hallamshire and Doncaster Divisions, 1885-1905 and there is some correspondence relating to these activities. He also appears to have acquired the business papers of the Hall family, old established solicitors of Castleton, of Brown solicitor of Tideswell, and of Richard Heyward, surveyor of Bakewell.

5. MISCELLANEOUS MAPS AND PLANS

6. FURTHER DEEDS

The original numerial summary list (see D7676/BagC/CAT/4for the collection does not reflect the above arrangement, which appears to have been determined according to how the Bagshawe's acquired the material. The numerical summary list may therefore reflect the arrangement of the records when they were received by Sheffield Archives:
BagC1-173 Deeds deposited before 1956
BagC174-310 Maps and Surveys: The maps illustrate the various aspects of the Bagshawe collection and appear to have been acquired from various sources. Those relating to lead mining, the turnpike maps and various other business maps come from Wyatt or Bagshawe. Many of the others would appear to have been acquired for their antiquarian interest, but there is no means of verifying this, excepting that the Eyre estate maps presumably came with the other Eyre muniments
BagC311-338 Miscellaneous items, mainly of personal or literary nature, all or mainly acquired by purchase (311-320 from the Bateman collection, 311-314 Estate and other records of William Eyre of Highlow (afterwards took the name of Archer), d. 1739
BagC339-375 Papers of the Eyres of Hassop
BagC376-565 Lead mining books, and some other inter-related accounts (including BagC477-509 Accounts relating to the Barker family, including in relation to the Duke of Devonshire's estates)
BagC566-671, 702-707 Business papers of B. and W. Wyatt, or possibly (in some cases) of the Bagshawes
BagC672-681, 701 Further maps and plans, apparently Col. Leslie's relating to Hassop estate
BagC682-695 Draft maps by Richard Heyward, surveyor of Bakewell, of the 1860s and 1870s.
BagC696-700, 708 Miscellaneous surveys
BagC709 Treeton Constables' Accounts
BagC710-758 Lead mining deeds, probably most of them acquired by Wyatt
BagC759-775 Miscellaneous items, mainly printed, obviously collected together for their local historical interest
BagC776-778 Correspondence of Benjamin Bagshawe junior (d. 1907)
BagC779 Volume of miscellaneous papers, mainly concerning the Eyres of Highlow (afterwards Archer) and related families (Bateman Library bookplate)
BagC780-3360 Deeds: The deeds were acquired from various sources, in many cases unknown. The most important group are those of the Eyres of Hassop, purchased at the time of the sale of Hassop Hall in 1919? Some others bear a bookseller's label. A certain number would appear to have been acquired from the Derbyshire solicitors, Hall of Castleton, and Brown of Tideswell; some of the former had already been deposited at Sheffield Archives before Mr E. G. Bagshawe's death. There are a few family deeds belonging to the Wyatt family, and a fair number relating to Bagshawe. Very few of the latter can be definitely identified as the archives of Mr Bagshawe's family; others may have been acquired by him and his father for their family interest. A group of lead-mining deeds and some other relating to the Longsdens, Heywards, etc. may have come to Wyatt in the course of business
BagC3361-3363 Antiquarian notes of the Bagshawes
BagC3364-3372 Miscellaneous papers collected by the Bagshawes for antiquarian interest
BagC3373-3405 Miscellaneous deeds probably derived from the Bagshawes business and estates (Some may have belonged to Hall of Castleton; a few are strays from the antiquarian collection)
BagC3406-3408 Additional Eyre deeds
BagC3409-3530 Bagshawe family papers: These are the papers of Benjamin Bagshawe senior (d. 1879), Benjamin Bagshawe junior (d. 1907) and E. G. Bagshawe (d. 1956). The Bagshawes also amassed a voluminous correspondence of which only selected portions have been preserved (see D7676/BagC776-778). They also acquired, through the executorship for William Wyatt of Foolow, a large collection of business papers and some estate and personal papers. Including Leading mining records of the Bagshawes, Antiquarian material, Miscellaneous papers found with the Bagshawes material but not clearly related to them,Papers of families other than Bagshawe: Barker of Edensor, Hall of Castleton, Canon Ling, Simeon, Ward of Hope, Wyatt of Foolow, Brown of Tideswell, solicitor

Finding AidsThe original note on the subject of Finding Aids reads: "The entries for the deeds in this catalogue are reduced from a fuller catalogue ... cutting down the original catalogue entries presented some difficulty, particularly in the case of the early deeds. It was decided to give fairly fully the subject matter including field names, of each of the earlier deeds, and omit the witnesses. It is regretted that it was not possible to include both within the scope of this catalogue. Dates are given in New Style."
Related MaterialSome material from the collection of Benjamin and E.G. Bagshawe which did not come to Sheffield Libraries (and subsequently to Sheffield Archives, then Derbyshire Record Office) was purchased for the South Yorkshire Industrial Museum (Cusworth Hall Museum). See the list headed 'Lead Mining MSS' in the Cusworth Hall Museum list 2 (filed with the Doncaster Archives lists). (?Documents now in the Goodchild Collection, Wakefield?)
