Description
John Wright, the younger, of Eyam and the proprietors of Water Grove Mine. For the extending of the mine through the property of John Wright. and counterpart.
This map is described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
A True Mapp… Commons within the [the Hamletts of (crossed out)] Hope …within the libertie of the [Forreste (crossed out)] Mannor of High Peake ... Surveyor:Joseph Eyre. Scale: no scale [1:12000]. Size: 40 x 72 cm. Materials: ink on paper. Notes: a similar map to above with slightly different title: the drafting of the perimeter boundary of this map is very sketchy and the purpose of the drawing seems to be to provide a rough base for the straight lines of the internal divisions of Kings and Commoners land and gradings: the boundary features mentioned differ in detail, e.g. omits 'spring on Losehill', notes 'tenters', but not 'at the walkmile Place', names 'Cock Bridge' not Knott Bridge: Hope, 1675 itself differs in these features from Hope [1639?], the latter shows 'spring on Lose Hill', 'tenters at the walkmile Place', 'Knott Bridge', but omits Winhill and Woolow: it would seem that the survey of 1639 has been used for the 1675 maps and the area re-measured to provide for 4 grades of land resulting in a very small change in the total measured acreage. This is a very rough drawing and may be a draft for the above, both are signed by the commissioners however. Location: The National Archives, Kew: PRO, MPC 1/16; copies in Manchester Archives, M35/2/42/6; Manchester Archives, M35/2/42/7, copy by Ben. Ayloffe, 23 Nov.1689. Materials: ink on vellum. Notes: clearer script but roughly and unattractively drawn, errors of line, no colouring, locations reduced, e.g. 'tenters' only; DRO, D7676/BagC/3349(i)
