Administrative History	William Bateman was an early barrow digger in the Peak District. He was also an experienced antiquarian and book collector. The family were nonconformists and William's father, Thomas, built the Congregational Chapel in Middleton in 1826. Commonplace books emerged in the fifteenth century with the availability of cheap paper and writing materials and were used as a type of scrapbook of written information of interest. This particular commonplace book contains considerable reproductions of biblical passages.
