Administrative History | The origins of the Harpur Crewe estate centred on Calke began in 1621 with the purchase of the estate there by Henry Harpur. In 1625 the same Henry bought the Abell family property in Ticknall. This established him as head of the junior branch of the family which had acquired by marriage in the 16th century the Swarkestone and other estates formerly owned by the Findern family. Henry Harpur was created a baronet in 1626 and died in 1638.
His grandson Sir John Harpur, 3rd baronet, inherited in 1677 the Swarkestone and Breadsall estates on the death of his kinsman, Sir John Harpur of Swarkestone, to which the following book of leases relates. |
