| Administrative History | The Rodes family, originally from Lincolnshire, acquired property by marriage in Staveley Woodhouse in Derbyshire in the 15th century. Francis Rodes (c.1530-1588) bought Barlbrough manor and built Barlborough Hall in 1583, to a design thought to be by Smythson. His son (Sir) John (1562-1639) sold Staveley Woodhouse and made Barlborough the family seat. John's son, Francis (d 1645), was created a baronet in 1641.
The baronetcy became extinct in 1743 on the death of Sir John Rodes (1670-1743), a member of the Society of Friends. The estate then passed to the Heathcote family and was eventually sold in the 20th century to the Sitwell family of Renishaw.
Barlborough Hall is now (2006) a preparatory school for Mount St Mary's College at Spinkhill in Eckington. |
