Administrative History | Caudwell’s Mill is a historic, water turbine powered, roller flour mill. Powered by water from the river Wye, one or more mills have stood on this site for at least 400 years. The present mill was built in 1874 by John Caudwell (1827-1891) and run as a family business for over a century, before closing in 1978. Caudwell built an entirely new structure which externally survives little changed, but the original millstones and water wheels had been replaced by rollers and turbines before the end of the 19th century. The mill may have produced only animal provender at first but within a few years was also milling flour. In 1926 the Hartington Mill was taken over and although later closed, a depot was retained there.
After the business closed, the mill was then purchased by a charitable trust which operates the mill. |
