Description | Local historian's collected papers, chiefly Long Eaton and District, 19th-20th cent, including historical notes, lecture notes, photographs, prints, publications and news cuttings |
Administrative History | Bernard Wallis Harrison (1910-2004) of Long Eaton and Breaston was a local historian. He wrote/collected historical notes, lecture notes, photographs, prints, publications and news cuttings mostly relating to his home areas. Both he and his wife May nee Stevens came from families with an established nonconformist tradition and this archive is particularly strong in documents concerning various Methodist denominations in the Long Eaton area in the early 20th century. During World War II Mr Harrison was instrumental in organising a rest and recreation facility for servicemen in the Baptist schoolroom in Station St Long Eaton. Over 1 ½ million servicemen are said to have used this centre between 1939 and 1946. Mr Harrison worked as a pharmacist for Boots the Chemists in Nottingham and photographs and news cuttings about the city are also to be found in this archive. |
Custodial History | This archive was donated to the Record Office by a private individual in October 2004. |
