Title
Personal letter from AP Arkwright aboard HMS Prompt off Sierra Leone to his grandfather, regarding his satisfaction in his posting to West Africa and its beneficial effect upon his chances of promotion. He mentions the thanks he has received from the Admiralty for a "courageous act" in capturing a ship bearing a cargo of slaves. Arkwright describes the job of “cruising for Slavers” as being “attended with every disadvantage, except the chance of promotions”. But he adds, “few have had the same duties to perform, such as, beating off Cannibals". He goes on to give a brief description of the English community at Sierra Leone.
