Date
[late 19th-20th cent]
Description
These papers relate to several generations of the Burrows family who came originally from Ketton in Rutland but settled in Mapperley and then in West Hallam in the late 19th century. The earliest member of the family represented in this series is John Burrows (1862-1944), who became head gardener at West Hallam Hall after an apprenticeship which included work at Keele Hall, Staffordshire. Other papers relate to John's wife Harriett nee Gamble (d1964), their children Elijah William (1891-1984), Katherine (1893-1988) and Evelyn (1903-1971) and John's brother George (1865-1949), a horticulturalist who worked extensively both in England and India.
Items of special interest include George Burrows' autobiographical notes, c1925; John Burrows' notes while an apprentice gardener, 1881-2; Katherine Burrows' work book as a school teacher in the early 20th century and letters from and about Elijah William Burrows who was permanently disabled by shell shock suffered in 1917.
