| Administrative History | Shardlow Rural Sanitary Authority was established in 1872. In 1894 it became a Rural District Council. In the late 1950s its name was changed to South East Derbyshire Rural District Council. It was in existence from 1894 until 1974, when the Council was abolished and the area it covered became part of Erewash Borough Council.
It originally covered the areas of Alvaston and Boulton, Arleston and Sinfin, Aston upon Trent, Barrow upon Trent, Breadsall, Breaston, Chaddesden, Chellaston, Church Wilne, Dale Abbey, Derby Hills, Draycott,Great Wilne, Hopwell, Little Eaton, Elvaston, Littleover, Melbourne, Morley, Ockbrook and Borrowash, Risley, Sandiacre, Shardlow, Sinfin Moor, Spondon, Stanley, Stanton by Bridge, Stanton by Dale, Swarkestone, West Hallam and Weston upon Trent, although some of these places were moved to other jurisdictions in the course of the 20th century.
Local councils had responsibility for approving new buildings and alterations and improvements to existing buildings. Plans of proposed works were lodged with the Council and recorded in building plan registers. The registers were annotated with details of the applicant and whether the scheme was approved. |
