Administrative History | The 1959 excursion enabled nearly 200 passengers to travel on the line from Leicester London Road Station onto the Cromford and High Peak Railway, followed by a 2.5 mile walk on the descent from Middleton Top.
A special rail tour of the Cromford and High Peak Railway was organised for members of the Midland region of the Stephenson Locomotive Society in April 1961. The purpose of the excursion was to give railway enthusiasts a rare opportunity to travel in open goods wagons on this historic line.
The tour began at Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, entered Derbyshire near Norbury and Ellastone before joining the Cromford and High Peak railway at Parsley Hay near Hartington. Then the train went to Buxton, returning via Parsley Hay to Middleton Top. Here passengers alighted and walked to Wirksworth to join a train to Derby. |
