Central School for Girls, Homelands School and the Village Community School, Normanton, Derby
Administrative History
The Central School for Girls, a selective girls' secondary school, was founded in the early years of the 20th century on a site in Hastings Street, Derby. The school moved to a purpose-built site in Normanton by Derby in 1938 and re-opened under the name Homelands School. It became a grammar school following the 1944 Education Act. In 1972 the school merged with Normanton Secondary Modern School and became a co-educational comprehensive. Reorganisation in the Derby education system led in September 1989 to the school's reopening as the Village Community School with the leaving age reduced to 16. The school closed in July 2001 as part of a further reorganisation and drive to reduce surplus places. The pupils were transferred predominantly to Bemrose and Sinfin schools.
