Entitled "General Index in the matter of Edwin Cadman Esquire of Westbourne House [Sheffield, Yorkshire] Heir at Law of Anthony James Ratclyffe, Earl of Newburgh".
Index refers to documents copied into pages of a journal, including wills, burials certificates, proofs of marriage and parentage, affidavits. The journal into which this information was copied is not included - however, later page of this volume contain additional information, such as copies of schedules of Hassop estate deeds, a pedigree of Edwin Cadman, an extract from the Gentleman's Magazine 28 Jan 1875, copies of close rolls held at the Public Record Office, now the National Archives, and notes about the rival claims to the title of Earl of Newburgh.
Manchester Times 20 December 1884 reported "extraordinary scene" at a rent audit at Hassop Hall, as Gladwin Clovis Cave, "who claims to be connected with the Newburghs, and says he is heir to Hassop Hall" warned tenants not to pay their rent to the representatives of the apparent owners. He then went to the hall, "knocked at the front door, and loudly demanded the surrender of the hall to him, saying it was his property". |
