Title
[Young family sitting down]
Date
[1780-1799]
Description
A domestic scene of a young family with pets. The husband, wearing breeches, and red and white striped waistcoat blue coat and bag-wig is seated in a chair. In his right hand he is holding a book, which he is reading, and he holds his wife's hand in his left. She is also seated, and wears a pale pink dress and a mobcap with a blue ribbon. She is looking at her husband, and on her lap is seated a small child in a white dress and red shoes. On the floor to the left of the man a tabby cat appears to be grooming a dog.
The scene takes place in a pleasant room. Light shines in through a window on the right of the picture, the walls are painted blue beneath the dado and white above it and the floor is covered in a carpet of what seems to be a Union Jack design. On the wall behind the couple is an oval mirror, on either side of which are allegorical paintings. To the left of the mirror is a picture of Time, standing in a landscape in front of a church. He is crowning two hearts joined by an arrow with a wreath. Below the picture the caption reads: 'Time strengthens our Love'. To the right of the mirror is a picture of a couple seated beneath a tree. The caption reads: 'How sweet the love that meets return'.
