Administrative History | The Eyre family were established at Hassop from the late 15th century. Francis Eyre (1762-1827) claimed the title 6th Earl of Newburgh in 1814, and this claim was re-iterated by his sons Thomas, 7th Earl (1790-1933) and Francis 8th Earl (b1794) who died unmarried in 1852. The estate then passed to Colonel Charles Leslie, husband of the 8th Earl's sister, and his son CS Leslie. In 1919 the estate was purchased by Col. Sir Henry H Stephenson Bt. (1865-1947). |
