| Administrative History | During the national coal strike in 1926, coal was mined at Bretby Lane, Newhall by a Miners’ Federation Group. Because of the good quality of the coal that was extracted, the pit was taken over in the same year by Nadin & Co Ltd. During the Second World War it was reported that less than 100 men were employed in the pit and that productivity reached record levels. At the end of the war output averaged 1000 tons per week. With the advent of nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947, the pit was closed. |
