Administrative History | The first cotton mill at Calver was built by John Gardom of Bubnell and John Pares of Leicester in around 1778. A larger mill was built between 1785 and 1786. After 1850 Calver Mill was taken over in turn by Greg & Co, Tolson, Gibb, Kershaw and Massey, and then, in 1920, by Charles Markham. In 1923 cotton production at Calver ceased as a result of a slump in trade.
W & G Sissons Ltd bought Calver Mill in 1947 for the production of stainless steel sinks and other metal items. The director of Calver Mill Estate Ltd was H G Sissons who died in 1975. This collection also contains records of properties owned by H G Sissons, including Eyam Barns, which was built for H G Sissons in the mid 1950s and Stoney Middleton Hall, which was bought in 1954. In 1994 W & G Sissons Ltd relocated to Chesterfield and the Mill was converted into living accommodation. |
