Administrative HistoryJohn Joseph Briggs (1819-1876) was a notable antiquarian, poet and naturalist. He was born at King's Newton, in Melbourne. Briggs attended schools at Wymeswold (Leicestershire) and Darley, and was apprenticed to W Bemrose and Sons, printers of Derby. As a result of ill-health, however, he did not complete his apprenticeship and he returned to King's Newton to assist his parents run their farm. Briggs was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
Custodial HistoryThese records were transferred by Derby Local Studies Library to Derbyshire Record Office in April 2000. They were originally passed to Derby Local Studies by Brooke-Taylor solicitors.
