Administrative History | John Cheadle Quant of Bonsall was a noted performer in local music halls and theatres, sometimes appearing under the stage name of 'Professor Quant'. His act was that of a ventriloquist, conjuror and singer of comic songs. The son of a respected vicar of the Church of England, he found himself engaged in a lawsuit with his father's second wife over some inherited land in Whittington which required him to show that he was legitimately born. Most of the records in this group have been brought together as a result of this case and include birth, marriage and death certificates for himself and other members of the Quant family. Also included, and of particular interest, is a scrap book of newspaper cuttings concerning his stage career (D5203/4/27). |
