Description | Family and estate papers relating to individuals including Dorothy Greaves (died 1784), Thomas Ley (died c1796), Susanna Ley (died c1800) and Robert Charles Ley, formerly Greaves. Rentals cover various places in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, e.g. Mayfield, Kniveton, Farley, Coton, Doveridge, Beamhurst, Cheadle, Biggin, Uttoxeter, Woodlands and Osmaston by Ashbourne. |
Administrative History | Mr Ley (c1747-1823) was the son of William Greaves of Ingleby, grandson of William Greaves of Mayfield (Staffordshire) and great- grandson of John Greaves of Beeley. For papers relating to the Greaves family of Beeley see D5233. He assumed the surname Ley in 1821 in accordance with the wishes of his maternal relatives, from whom he had inherited a large estate. The papers in this collection appear to have been brought together during administration of his estate after his death, as evidence of his financial affairs. They include papers relating to other family members, presumably acquired by Mr Ley in the course of his business as executor or trustee. The final three items relate to the Scott estate at Draycott and have no obvious connection to the rest of the collection. |
Custodial History | The collection was transferred from Derby Library in March 2000 and was formerly numbered DL164. |
