Archive CreatorGale Family of Brassington
Administrative HistoryIn his will Robert Gale, citizen of London, Vintner set up a charitable trust to pay to the poor of Chippenham, Lincolnshire, Christs Hospital, London and Christs College, Oxford £20 each yearly from the tithes of Brassington. A dispute arose between the administrators of the bequest and those paying the tithes over whether Robert Gale had the right to assign the tithes in this way and whether tithes were payable on the lead ore mined in Brassington.
Custodial HistoryThe collection was brought together by Charles and Philip Lacock, the administrators of the bequest, in the process of fighting the Chancery case. Their original system of keeping the records in bundles, tied together has been retained. The collection was transferred to Derbyshire Record Office in April 2000 from Derby Library where it bore the reference number DL 66.
