Peggy portraid
or
The real Characther
Written at the Bench under the great Tree on Shipley Hill
Miss Peggy's innocent & young
with piercing Eyes, & artless Tongue
The sprightliest Lass the maids among
And mirror of her age
So much Esprit, such matchless air,
Gentell & brisk beyond compare
Wth mien that's always debonair,
And Breast devoid of Rage
2
When e'er she plies the tunefull Lire,
The trembling strings at once conspire
To se the listening Soul on Fire
Of each attending Swain.
And when she foots it in the Dance,
Ye Gods! she moves as 'twere by chance,
W'ch does her ever Grace enhance.
But ever Lovers pain.
3
Estrang'd from Guile & female Art
Her envy'd Conduct does impart
The Dictates of an honest Heart
Constrast to worldly Fools
The blush ye prudes in her you'l find
The innate Beauties of her Mind
To be transcendantly refin'd
Maugre yr fusty rules
