| Description | Parchment bound volume, with embossed lozenge pattern on front. The first page is inscribed: ‘Ledger for Accompt of Mrs Elizabeth Clerke & John Tufnayle in Equall Staffs Begune in London ye 14: June 1661’. Underneath, in an 18th Century hand is the signature of C Palmer, probably Charles Palmer Esq. of Ladbroke Hall.
The ledger from 14 June 1661 to August 1662 relates to a textile business, in which Elizabeth Clerke and John Tufnayle appear to have had equal share. The ledger includes expenses relating to the dying, transport and cargo space in London for cloths such as baize, bocking, and Colchester.
The book has been reused from 1742 to 1780 as a rough record of rents received, giving names of tenants and amount of rent paid. Place names are not usually given but Southam and Chapel Ascote are mentioned, indicating that the rental relates to Ladbroke, Warwickshire, which was owned by the Palmer family. A few loose receipts (1765-1780) are included. |
| Administrative History | It is not known how this ledger came into the Miller Mundy family archive, but there is a family connection between the Palmers and the Mundys as Charles Palmer of Ladbroke married Mary, the sister of Sir Roger Newdigate, whose second wife was Hester Mundy. The size and style of the binding are very similar to D517/BOX/13/2, the account book of Edward Mundy. |
